“The colors of objects change their designs” - Henri Edmond Cross

We were drawn to this painting because the artist’s technique of applying layers of colors is like assembling a puzzle. Each is singular but together makes a full picture.

In the 1890s, Henri Edmond Cross was making paintings using the Pointillism technique of blending scientific principles of color theory and dots of pure color. But, Cross believed in individualism and soon developed a looser version of this practice by applying square-shaped, elongated brushstrokes of intense hues, a method that regarded color as a being in its own right. This freed artists to develop their own expressive styles and ushered in the Fauves, like Henri Matisse, who used intense color as a vehicle for describing light and space, and who redefined pure color and form as means of communicating the artist's emotional state.
